Daily Tips from Red Cross and ADEM for National Preparedness Month

In partnership with the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) the Red Cross will be providing tips every day in the month of September to help families be more prepared for emergencies.

Red Cross Launches Disaster Relief Fundraising Drive

The American Red Cross has launched a new fundraising drive in anticipation of a very active hurricane season that could be made even worse by the Gulf Coast oil spill. We all know that in Arkansas, while we are not directly affected by a hurricane, we must be prepared if and when a hurricane hits the Gulf Coast. The Northwest Arkansas Chapter will be ready to help our neighbors should they once again be evacuated to our state. In addition, because of our proximity to the hurricane-prone region of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, our volunteers and equipment must always be at the ready if needed to deploy to the affected area.

I hope the citizens of Northwest Arkansas, the River Valley, the Ozark Mountains and the Twin Lakes areas are all proud to know that your chapter is well prepared and well trained to respond to an emergency at home or wherever disaster strikes. But in order to accomplish this daunting task, we need the support of the American people, and the citizens of Arkansas.

The American Red Cross is not a government agency; our disaster relief is a gift provided by the generosity of the American people. We rely on the donations from individuals, families, churches, schools, businesses, and corporations to serve our neighbors during their greatest time of need.

Six Month progress report on Haiti Earthquake response and recovery efforts

The American Red Cross today announced a series of new or expanded initiatives that will help keep open the largest general hospital in Haiti, help build more semi-permanent shelters for 40,000 people now living in tents and tarps, and provide financial assistance to tens of thousands of earthquake survivors through an innovative text messaging program.

The announcements were made during a Red Cross briefing on the upcoming six-month anniversary of the devastating January 12 earthquake in Haiti.

The NWA Chapter of the American Red Cross held a presentation on December 11th to show the community our new disaster readiness supplies, including four brand-new trailers loaded with shelter supplies. This presentation was also a wonderful way for the chapter to thank Wal-Mart for their capacity building grant that allowed for the purchase of these items.

CPR Made Simple Program Launches

The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce the launch of the new CPR Made Simple non-certified program. CPR Made Simple provides individuals with a one-hour overview of the critical skills that may help them save the life of a family member, friend or co-worker. In this simplified training, lecture is kept to a minimum so that participants can focus on hands-on practice of CPR/AED skills. The class cost $20, making it an affordable and time sensitive option for individuals and businesses.
